Roene (Sweet) Ditmars

Roene (Sweet) Ditmars

-

Roene Ditmars, 95, of Greentop, Missouri, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, June 30, 2021. She was born September 5, 1925, the second daughter of Theodore and Ruby (Peterson) Sweet in Willmathsville, Missouri. She attended the Willmathsville rural school for grades 1-8 and graduated from Kirksville Senior High School with the Class of 1942. After graduation, she attended Chillicothe Business School before marrying N.L. Ditmars of Greentop, Missouri, on November 2, 1942. N.L. was then serving in the U.S. Air Force and after his honorable discharge, they farmed his family farm in Greentop before settling on their own farm one-half mile north of Sperry in Adair County. They farmed and raised registered Angus cattle for most of their married life in the Sperry community. Roene enjoyed working in every capacity on their farm. She raised a large garden, sometimes two, as well as assisting with the cattle and in any area of the farm where needed. She was N.L.'s best and most willing farm hand.

Roene was a long-time member of the Sperry Baptist Church. In the last years of the life of that church, she taught Sunday School, was church treasurer, and kept the church going for many years longer than it would have without her devotion to that small church family and her love of Jesus. In earlier years she was active as project leader for the Sperry 4-H club. She worked at McGraw Edison and Hollister, Inc. in Kirksville until her retirement in 1991, but her first and constant loves were her family, farm, and neighborhood church.

Roene was preceded in death by N.L. Ditmars, her husband of 64 years, on March 2, 2007; her parents Theodore and Ruby Sweet, parents-in-law, Warner and Ruby Ditmars, sister and brother-in-law Ivalee and Robert Hartsock, brother Charles Sweet, brother-in-law Kenneth Ditmars and his wife Dorothy, brother-in-law Farrell Ditmars, sister-in-law Lee Jones, sister-in-law Adah Mae Christman and her husband Harold, and many other dear relatives.

Roene (Sweet) Ditmars is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Sandra Sparks (Riley "Skip") of Ewing, MO, and Kaye Bertels (Steve) of Meta, MO. Six grandchildren also survive: Kevin Sparks (friend Mary) of Hannibal, MO, David Sparks (Teena) of Ewing, MO, Stephanie Sparks Simmons (Rick) of Lewistown, MO, Jared Bertels (Kellie) of Westphalia, MO, Heather Bertels Ogun (Admo) of Vienna, Virginia, Amber Bertels Castleman (Chad) of Jefferson City, MO; thirteen great-grandchildren, ten great-great-grandchildren, brother Junior Sweet (Charlotte) of Kirksville, MO as well as nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Public visitation will be held on Saturday, July 3, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville, followed by a graveside service at Park View Memorial Gardens in Kirksville, with Pastor Darrell Draper officiating.

Expressions of sympathy in memory of Roene may be made to The Lester's (Gospel Group) or to Willmathsville Cemetery and may be left at or mailed to Travis-Noe Funeral Home, P.O. Box 306, Kirksville, MO 63501.
