Lyle Dell Smith, 92, of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away Monday (March 23, 2015) at Twin Pines Adult Care Center in Kirksville.

The son of Ora and Jessie (Hutchinson) Smith, he was born September 6, 1922 in Green Castle, Missouri. On October 9, 1943, in Paris, Tennessee, Lyle married Berniece Elston, who survives.

Lyle is also survived by one son, Randy Lee Smith and wife Maria of Chandler, Arizona; one daughter, Carol Anita Williams and husband Jim of Jordan, Montana; Dad's special angel Sharon May; six grandchildren, Patrick Brian Smith, Michelle Dean, Sandi (Benny) Gavin, Mike (Diane) Williams, Tony (Jo) Williams, and Dan (Patty) Williams; and six great grandchildren, Matthew Smith, Christopher Smith, Caleb Dean, Gunner Dean, Anita Guderjohn and Kelly (Josh) Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Billie Joe Smith; one brother, Penny Smith; two sisters, Leta Belle McConnell and Ruby Watson; and one grandson, Todd Williams.

Lyle served in the United States Army during World War II. He served in several campaigns during the war including: Ardennes, Central Europe, Rhineland, Normandy and N. France. For this service, Lyle was awarded five bronze stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbons with three overseas bars. In addition, he was awarded the State of Missouri Patriotic Service Medal.

After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, Lyle was employed with McGraw's before working for and retiring from Hollisters in 1981. Lyle attended the Fellowship Baptist church of Kirksville. He enjoyed his family, traveling, playing cards, reading, and trading cars.

Public visitation will be held Thursday (March 26, 2015) with family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the chapel of Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday (March 27, 2015) at Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville, with Pastor Larry Gibson officiating. Interment with military honors will follow the service at Park View Memorial Gardens in Kirksville.

Pallbearers will be Michael Williams, Danny Williams, Tony Williams, David Stegmann, Jim Howell and Jerry Thomas. Bud Niccum will be an honorary pallbearer.

Expressions of sympathy in memory of Lyle Smith may be made to Honor Flight. Memorials may be left at or mailed to Travis-Noe Funeral Home, P.O. Box 306, Kirksville, MO 63501.
