Dr. Victor “Vic” Francis Hoffman III, 69, of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away Tuesday (November 1, 2011) at University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia.

The son of Victor Francis Hoffman, Jr. and Ruth Albertson Welch, he was born June 7, 1942 in Adair County, Missouri. On April 14, 1968 in Kirksville, Missouri, Vic was united in marriage to Carol Ilene Kenepp, who preceded him in death on January 23, 2008. On May 2, 2009 in Adair County, Vic was united in marriage to Sharon Montgomery, who survives.

Vic is also survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, John Hoffman of Webster City, IA and David and Roseann Hoffman of Archie, MO; two daughters and a son-in-law, Shelly (Blunt) and Stephen Glueckert of Mount Vernon, IN, and Emily Hoffman of Kirksville, MO; his mother Ruth Welch of Chevy Chase, MD; his brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Ginny Hoffman of Potomac, MD; nine grandchildren, Aaron Hoffman, Allyson Blunt, Rachel Hoffman, Sydney Hoffman, Adam Blunt, Madison Hoffman, Benjamin Glueckert, Trey Hoffman and Dayton Hoffman; three step-sons, Jeff Montgomery, Gene Montgomery and James Montgomery; two step-daughters, Monica March and Sonya Clark as well as several nieces and nephews.

Vic was preceded in death by his father.

Vic attended Sperry school and graduated from Kirksville High School with the Class of 1960. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Northeast Missouri State University, and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry from the University of Iowa. Vic taught mathematics and science at high schools in Ewing, Auxvasse, and LaPlata. In 1969, Vic began teaching chemistry at Truman State University. He was a teacher, mentor, and friend to many students until he retired in 2009 as professor emeritus after forty years of service.

Vic’s passion was raising Angus cattle on the family farm. His grandfather started the Angus herd in 1918. He was a beef leader for East Center 4-H club for many years. He loved showing cattle with his children at fairs and made many life-long friends. Vic enjoyed working on the farm with his grandchildren and riding with them on the four-wheeler. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Vic was a past member of Kirksville R-III School Board, University of Missouri Extension Council of Adair County, NEMO Fair Board, member of Missouri Farm Bureau, Missouri Angus Association, American Angus Association, Kirksville Rotary Club, and a member of Bethel Community Church.

Public visitation will be held Friday (November 4, 2011) with family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the chapel of Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville.

Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday (November 5, 2011) at Travis-Noe Funeral Home, with Pastor Marvin Cross officiating. Music selections “In the Garden” and “Daddy’s Hands” will be provided by Janelle Bradshaw, who will be accompanied by Dianthe Cable, organist. Selection “I Will Rise” will also be played during his service. Interment will follow the service at Park View Memorial Gardens in Kirksville.

Pallbearers will be Jerrin Primm, Chris Collop, Alan Clark, Frank Collop, Pat Winkleman and Glenn Wehner. Honorary pallbearers will be George Schulte, Burrell Harris, David Clark, Jack Winkleman, Ray Ambrosia and Jack Magruder.

Expressions of sympathy in memory of Vic Hoffman may be made to Bethel Community Church or to the Victor Hoffman Memorial Fund. Memorials may be left at or mailed to Travis-Noe Funeral Home, P.O. Box 306, Kirksville, MO 63501.
