Doctor James Donald Smith, 77, of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away peacefully, April 20th, 2018 in Kansas City, Missouri surrounded by his family.

The son of the late James A. Smith & Mary Lou Laws Smith, was born September 26th 1940 in California. He is also preceded in death by his sister-in-law Carol Faye Smith. He is survived by two brothers Paul Smith and Tom Smith (Linda Smith). His children, Serece Sumners (Peter Sumners) & Nathan Smith (Shalini Smith). Grandchildren Peter and Grant Sumners and Samuel and Sophia Smith as well as many nieces and nephews.

Don was a 1958 graduate of Ravanna High School in Ravanna, Missouri, Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo, and A.T. Still University in Kirksville, Missouri in 1970. He worked as a physician, proudly healing residents of Northeast Missouri for over 40 years including making house calls until the day he retired.

Don loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, making people laugh, motorcycles, his lifelong gun collection, and spending time with family and grandkids.

He was an active member of many organizations. Some of his favorites were Deputy Sheriff of Adair County, Shrine Club, Ducks Unlimited, various community and hospital and peer review boards, NRA, City Clerk of Princeton, MO, and Missouri Department of Conservation.

Our Dad wrote thousands of scripts for hundreds of patients yet the one script he gave everyone, which had unlimited refills and was probably the most healing was his personal mixture of compassion, love, and empathy.

A public visitation will be held Saturday April 28th 2018 from 5:00-8:00pm at Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville, MO.

Funeral service will be held at 3:00pm Sunday April 29th in Princeton, Mo at United Methodist Church with burial following in Ravanna, Missouri.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the following:
A.T. Still University (which will directly assists medical students), Dementia & Alzheimer's Association or to Dementia with Lewy Body organization, and may be left at or mailed to Travis-Noe Funeral Home, P.O. Box 306, Kirksville, MO 63501.

To Nathan, Serece and the entire family,
Steve and I want to express our condolences for Don's passing. He was our family doctor until his retirement as you know and was a good friend. We know how great a doctor he was and also how great a dad and granddad. He will be missed by so many people. May he rest in peace. God gave us large hearts so that we can cherish all our memories. You have so many to be thankful for.
Our prayers are for your healing hearts and that Don rest in peace. We are not able to celebrate his life at his memorial, but we will be there in spirit. Peace and blessings.
