Nellie Hazel (Walker) Grissom, 100, of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, October 8, 2025 at the La Plata Nursing Home in La Plata, Missouri.
The daughter of William Alvin and Sarah Lillian (Long) Walker, Hazel was born October 9, 1924 in rural Adair County, Missouri. On February 9, 1944, she was united in marriage to Henry Marion "H.M." Grissom, Jr., and to this union four children were born. They were blessed with sixty-five years and sixteen days of marriage.
Hazel is survived by four children and their families; Eldon Grissom and wife Linda of Kirksville, Loren Grissom of Kirksville, Sherry Treasure and husband Roger of Kirksville, and Pam Bleything and husband Todd of Brashear. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Eldon Grissom, Jr. and wife Mindy, David Grissom and wife Christy, John Paul Grissom, Ryan Treasure and wife Tanya, Renee, Kristen Braaten and husband Eric, and Jacob and wife Hailey Bleything; fourteen great grandchildren, Taylor Elgin, Drew Jones, Jayse Jones, Dreyton Grissom, Devan and Morgan Grissom, Leah, Hannah and Caleb Grissom, Teagan Treasure, Kolby, Kolton, Kenzie Braaten and Blakely Bleything; three great-great grandchildren; one step-brother Ernie Walker; two half-sisters, Sharon Brown and Linda Page; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one granddaughter, Michaela Bleything; one brother, Alvin Walker; one nephew, Gary Grissom; and one half-brother, Darrell Walker.
Hazel graduated from Kirksville High School with the class of 1942. She later attended Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (Truman State University) for a short time until she took a job as secretary and bookkeeper at the A.S.O. Hospital in Kirksville.
After her marriage she helped her husband on the farm until going to work as a manager of the Goodwill Store. Her last job of public employment was at First National Bank until she retired.
Hazel and H.M. were both longtime members of Hamilton Street Baptist Church. They both enjoyed, more than anything, getting all the family together for birthdays, holidays and any special time. Their friends were always welcome as these special occasions.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 11, 2025 at Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville, with pastor Ralph Wheeler officiating. Burial will immediately follow at the Yarrow Cemetery in Yarrow, Missouri.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time in the chapel of Travis-Noe Funeral Home.
