Marion S. Airale, passed away Monday, March 14, 2022 at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville.
Born March 18, 1928 in Novinger, Missouri, Marion was the son of Anthony and Mary (Tarro) Airale. Marion married Peggy Hanlin on March 27, 1983 in Novinger, Missouri and she preceded him in death in 1994. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Mary Airale; one brother, John Airale and wife Berineice; one niece, Linda Airale; one step-grandchild, Brian Hanlin; and one step son-in-law, Jeff Franklin.
Marion is survived by two step-sons and one step-daughter: Jack (Stephanie) Hanlin of Kirksville, MO, Jim (Peggy) Hanlin of Brashear, MO, and Belinda Franklin of Austin, TX; one niece, Susan (Tom) Dargan of Weymoth, MA; three step grandchildren, Bret Hanlin, Erin Franklin, and Adria Smith, as well as a good friend, Ann Gray of Kirksville, MO.
Marion was a graduate from Novinger R-I High School with the Class of 1946. After graduating he went to California for six months and after returning to Missouri he attended Northeast Missouri State Teacher's College. Marion then enlisted into the United States Army where he proudly served from 1950 to 1952. After being honorably discharged, Marion went to work for BN Railroad working with the bridge gang for well over thirty-five years until retiring in 1988.
Marion was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church of Novinger, a member of V.F.W. Post 2508 for more than fifty years as well as the Kirksville Moose Lodge #1751. Marion worked at the V.F.W. Post part-time bartending and helped set up for bingo every Tuesday. He also flagged several cemeteries for Memorial Day weekend for several years. Marion was an avid sports fan especially baseball and football. He was excellent at sports trivia, playing pool and pitching horseshoes as he had several trophies for both sports. He also enjoyed working crossword puzzles and reading. Marion will be remembered for being very generous with his money as he gave to many charities. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 21, 2022 at St. Rose Catholic Church in Novinger, with Monsignor Marion Makarewicz presiding. Family will receive friends on Monday for one hour before Mass. Interment with military honors will follow Mass at Novinger Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Rose Catholic Church and may be left at St. Rose on Monday or left at or mailed to Travis-Noe Funeral Home, P.O. Box 306, Kirksville, MO 63501.
