George Euel Johnson, 80, of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away Thursday (January 10, 2013) at his home under the care of his family and Hospice of Northeast Missouri.
The son of George Emery and Flora (Mears) Johnson, he was born March 24, 1932 in Kirksville, Missouri. In 1956 he married Roberta Helen Moore and to this union four children were born. On January 28, 1972 in Kirksville, Missouri, George was united in marriage to Doris Neely Jones.
George is survived by his wife Doris; two sons, Joseph Lee Johnson of Kirksville, MO and Darin Jay Johnson and wife Nancy of Denver, CO; one daughter, Candice Lynette Johnson of Clemmons, N.C., two step sons, Tony Jones and wife Barb of Kirksville, MO and Tim Jones and friend, Mitchell Farris, as well as two special grandchildren from Kirksville, MO, Tanner Bryce and Bailey Kristine Jones.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Gregory Irl Johnson, one step son, Terry Alan Jones, and two brothers, Irl Duane and Larry Don Johnson.
George was a graduate from Kirksville High School with the Class of 1950. He served his country from 1951 to 1955 in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. From 1956 to 1961, George was employed for Missouri Midland Gas Co. In 1961 he went to work for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier until retiring in 1987. He was also bar tender for El Kadir Shrine Club and at the Kirksville Moose Lodge Post #1751 a number of years.
George was a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post 2508 where he served as a member of the Burial Staff for over thirty years; was a lifetime member of Kirksville Moose Lodge #1751, serving as Governor in 1990 and with the Ritual Staff, and was a member of the Kirksville Masonic Lodge.
He was a member of Mary Immaculate Catholic Church of Kirksville.
Funeral service will be held 4:00 p.m. Saturday (January 12, 2013) at Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville, with Father Bill Kottenstette presiding. Military honors will be held following the service at Travis-Noe Funeral Home.
Family will receive friends Saturday (January 12, 2013) from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. before the service in the chapel of Travis-Noe Funeral Home.
It was George’s wish to be cremated following his service and he will be interred at a later date.
