Walter Ellis Mullenix, 87, of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away Saturday (August 27, 2011) at Twin Pines Adult Care Center in Kirksville.
The son of Preston and Ruthie (Redix) Mullenix, he was born February 3, 1924 in Green Grove, Missouri. On April 26, 1951 in Kirksville, Missouri, Walter was united in marriage to Peggy Pauline Horton who preceded him in death on August 24, 2001.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Joe Mullenix and one sister, Verna Easter.
Walter is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry Dee & Pat Mullenix of Waterloo, IA and Dennis Eugene and Penny Mullenix of Jacksonville, MO; one brother and sister-in-law, Glen and Bonnie Mullenix of Milan, MO; one sister, Shirley Mullenix of Florida; four grandchildren, Jeff Mullenix, Buffy Simmons, Julie Burnside and Aaron Greenway and three great-grandchildren, Avaya Burnside, Shelby Simmons and Anna Greenway.
Walter was a life-long resident of Adair County and received his education in the Adair County rural schools. He served in the United States Army and after being honorably discharged, returned home. He was engaged in farming, was a self employed mechanic and was part owner of a gun shop.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and spending time in the great outdoors, which he loved. Walter was a member of the NRA.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday (August 31, 2011) with family receiving friends from 12:30 to service time in the chapel of Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville. The Reverend Charles Jackson will officiate the service. Music selections, “Amazing Grace” and “Beyond The Sunset” will be provided by Twila Jones, who will be accompanied by Dianthe Cable, organist.
Interment with military honors will follow the service at Parkview Memorials Gardens in Kirksville.
Pallbearers will be John burns, Andy Sutton, Steve Parrish, Paul Goodwin, Brian Dover and Steve Crockett, and Glen Mullenix will be an honorary pallbearer.
