Alice Irene (Pyle) Slaughter, 90, of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away Saturday (February 15, 2014) at Highland Crest Assisted Living in Kirksville.

Born December 27, 1923 in Macon County, Alice was the daughter of Earl and Maude (Shaffer) Pyle. On March 3, 1945 in Adair County, Alice was united in marriage to Jacob Howard Slaughter.

Alice is survived by her daughters, Linda Phegley of Francesville, IN, Debby and husband Roger Babcock of Auburndale, FL and daughter-in-law, Anita Slaughter of Kirksville, MO; one brother Clifford Smith of Peck, ID; three sisters, Marjorie Mossbarger of LaPlata, MO, Ruth Hawkins and husband Willard of Evans, CO and Alma Amidei and husband Bruno of Bevier, MO; 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Howard on October 25, 2002; one son, Richard “Rick” Slaughter; six sisters, Thelma Lacer, Joyce Walgren, Wanda Bryn, Gladys Phipps, Dorothy Berry and Blanche Helton, as well as two grandchildren, Micah and Heather Babcock.

Alice graduated from Gifford High School and attended Northeast Missouri State Teachers College. She taught in various rural schools in Macon County. Howard and Alice lived on a farm west of Gifford until 1972 and then moved to the Troy Mills community. Alice worked at the LaPlata Nursing Home and did housework for several. She loved to crochet afghans and make quilts for her grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday (February 19, 2014) at Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville, with Chaplain Carrol Davenport officiating. Interment will follow the service at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, south of Yarrow.

Family will receive friends on Wednesday (February 19, 2014) for one hour before the service in the chapel of Travis-Noe Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Culp, Scott Slaughter, Andy Conley, Tray Towles, Zephaniah Conley, Lazarus Conley and Christopher Culp.

It is the wish of the family that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Hospice of Northeast Missouri or to the Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Memorials may be left at or mailed to Travis-Noe Funeral Home, P.O. Box 306, Kirksville, MO 63501.
