Susan “Opal” (Walker) Haggy, 98, of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away Friday (November 21, 2014) at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville.

The daughter of James and Nellie (Spencer) Walker, she was born July 28, 1916 near Green Castle, Missouri. On May 2, 1931 in Milan, Missouri, Opal was united in marriage to Acel Haggy who preceded her in death on August 19, 1986.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Steve Haggy; one daughter, Hazel in infancy; one granddaughter, Kimberly Niece; one great granddaughter, Kaitlyn Haggy; seven brothers and two sisters.

Opal is survived by seven daughters, Vernetta Smith of Kirksville, MO, Betty Wood of LaPlata, MO, Carletta Johnson and husband Bill of Milan, MO, Farris Peterson of Kirksville, MO, Leah Johnson of Trenton, MO, Joyce Darnell and husband Wayne of Omaha, NE and Geannie Cox and husband Richard of Huntsville, MO; 21 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; 42 great great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Opal received her education in the Kent rural school. She owned Leofflers Country Store until going to work as a cook for the Kirksville public school for a short time. She then was employed for KOH Hospital in the laundry department until going to work at Ryle Hall at Kirksville State Teachers College. Opal last was employed as a housekeeper for the Student Union at the college until retiring.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday (November 23, 2014) at Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville, with Pastor Alan Coonfield officiating. Interment will follow the service at Cheesman Cemetery in Green Castle, Missouri.

Family will receive friends on Sunday for one hour before the service in the chapel of Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville.

Pallbearers will be Larry Smith, Travis Cox, Kelvin Hoffman, Derlin Johnson, William Beyer and Tony Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Johnson, Dean Hoffman, Matt Johnson, Don Wood, Terry Smith and Josh Smith.

Expressions of sympathy in memory of Opal Haggy may be made to Cheesman Cemetery. Memorials may be left at or mailed to Travis-Noe Funeral Home, P.O. Box 306, Kirksville, MO 63501.
